Patiala : Punjabi Khana updated!

"What's for dinner?"
"Why are we going here?"
"I don't want to go there"!"
"Humein Vaha Kyun Jaana Hai?"

If you were in my house at this time, you would have most probably heard these exclamations in crying or angry tones from my sister and me.

It was just the other Thursday when my family started to bicker on the subject of dinner. To tell you honestly, my family always has an argument when we have to go out to eat. We were going to Souk Al Bahar, and I really wanted to try the Abd El Wahab, the Lebanese restaurant over there. My parents wanted Indian, while my sister sulked as usual. Counting her out, the majority won and by chance we found Patiala over there. My mother, who had her Iphone handy, managed to do research on Patiala, the chef and all about Souk al Bahar. She also saw reviews, which gave it full on TimeOut! The reaction after eating the food was an OMG (In a good way), but the only thing I hated was that my mother smiled a little smile of victory, standing with the I-told-you-so expression, after dinner, telling us to thank her for bringing us here. (How ever many times it happens, I'm still amazed by her statement always being right!)

With the modern decor, lounge music and elegant and stylish staff, anyone could have said  that Patiala is a modern, contemporary restaurant that served fusion Indian, the growing trend of these days. Surprisingly, the restaurant did not serve fusion Indian. It was a restaurant which served Ghar-Ka-Khana or Punjabi style Home Cooking, just a little updated, the one that made my mother feel nostalgic and reminded her of her home in Delhi.

A picture says a thousand words. By looking at the picture, who couldn't say that this restaurant is not a contemporary one. Elegant and modern lighting, a cozy and rightly selected brown, golden, black decor with an Indian touch, and the open viewing kitchen and the far end, give the restaurant a contemporary touch.

The food is equally good. the Lamb Barrah Kabab, The Fish Zaveri, The Tadka Dal and The Gulab Halwa were the highlight of my meal. The staff was equally elegant, catering to our needs at the slightest call. The highlight of the show was when we met the head chef, Sanjay Bahl. An extremely jovial Dilli-Wale uncle, he put us at ease when we met. Speaking to us in Hindi, he made us feel extremely comfortable during our meal. Do not be influenced by the extremely modern and formal appearance of this place. Under all this decor, is hidden, The soul of princely Punjab, bringing to our minds nostalgia, and comfort of good food and the true spirit of Indian Ghar-Ki-Cooking!

This Restaurant is located at Souk Al Bahar, Dubai Mall.

  2. Amay, Mouth watering post!!! I so wish I was in Dubai to experience the food, ambiance and over all dining experience you had. It's amazing how you changed the perception for the readers at far distance that 'Authentic Punjabi food' is not just about Dhabas on National Highways in India, no doubt their food too is amazing, but the same food can be tasted/experienced in a setting like this restaurant.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!! I hope to visit some day!!
